Raising Caring Children in Somerville
What kinds of messages are we sending to our children, and what messages should we be sending?
How can a focus on happiness and achievement undermine a child’s capacity to empathize and care for others? How can focusing on happiness and achievement actually make kids less happy? In his talk, Dr. Richard Weissbourd, author of The Parents We Mean to Be: How Well-Intentioned Adults Undermine Children’s Moral and Emotional Development, Harvard Lecturer, and Faculty Director of the Making Caring Common Project, will share research-based strategies for parents and educators in the Somerville community to help children learn empathy and to care for others, including those different from them in background and character.
