Join Gallery @ SPL for the exhibit opening of Bhāvam by Ananda Thiagarajan! Ananda is a photographer who likes to center her work around images of hope and joy. Her photos were taken in both India and the US, and she is thrilled to be displaying her work here to the broader Somerville Community.

Artist statement:

Yad bhavam tad Bhavathi.

This sentence is an extract from ancient sacred Vedas of Hindu Culture, which means: your inner thoughts make your outer appearance. "Bhavam" means the inner thoughts and disposition.

This is an exhibit showcasing the street photography work I did while in India. The intriguing part of it was being able to capture candid pictures of people and trying to freeze the moment. The one emotion I have seen being displayed constantly in these faces you will see in my exhibition is hope. Even when faced with adversities and poor living conditions, they never lost their smile and being able to capture that emotion is what gives me pleasure.

I have also included some pictures I took in the US and people who reflect the same theme of hope and joy. Emotions bind us and it is my belief that deep down all people are bound by hope.
