Center and School-Based programs may serve infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and include programs in public schools, Head Start, and private preschool or childcare programs. These programs take place in a variety of sites from school buildings, to renovated industrial spaces or homes, to locations adjacent to public housing. Programs (other than those in public schools) should be licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care.

Family Child Care programs take place in a provider’s home. They can care for children from infant through school age and may serve between 6 or 10 children (with an assistant). Department of Early Education and Care licenses should be posted and providers should have training in safety, child development, and curriculum.

Bright Future Educare Center Services

We open at 7:15am and close at 5:30pm. We serve "breakfast" cereal and soy milk. We provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the age, needs and interests of the children. Activities vary and develop talents and skills that enhance learning areas such as art, science, music, mathematics, phonics, and reading. Emphasis is also placed on fine/gross motor skills, self-help skills, social and emotional skills. Our outdoor play time on a daily basis is sixty minutes of physical activities.

Community Action Agency of Somerville Head Start

CAAS Head Start is a free preschool program funded by the federal government for low income families. We support the learning and development of children ages 3 -5 years and prepare them to be successful in Kindergarten and beyond. We provide comprehensive services to children and families: Supports for children with special needs, social services, health and nutrition supports, and family advocacy and engagement. We have two sites in Somerville: the Mystic Center at Mystic Public Housing and the Jack Hamilton Center at 29 Allen Street. We also have classrooms in partnership with the Somerville Public Schools at the Arthur D Healey School and the Capuano Early Childhood Center. Individual classroom start times vary. Somerville Child Care Center (SCCC) has one classroom and services 16 children daily. The teacher - child ratio is 1 teacher for 8 children. The classroom is divided into learning centers and a variety of materials and activities are offered. The mission of SCCC is to provide opportunities to develop cognitive, language, physical, social, emotional and self-help skills by designing an open classroom that supports independence by allowing children to make choices and initiate activities. The philosophy at SCCC is that children learn and develop skills through their interactions with their environment and through their play.

Somerville Public Schools Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP)

The ECIP is a multi-sensory preschool program that serves both children with special needs and typically developing children from the Somerville Community. In order to be considered for a placement in an integrated classroom, the potential peers must be three years old by August 31st and a resident of Somerville. All peer students must be fully toilet trained with no pull ups. The program uses the same benchmarks and curriculum as the SMILE program and is based on a developmental model where each child builds on his or her own skills. Each class is led by a highly trained certified Special Education teacher. In addition, each room has a paraprofessional who has experience working with different types of learners. ECIP school hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Children who have special needs may be transported by bus to and from the Capuano Center. Parents/guardians of youth who are typically developing peers are responsible for their child's transportation.

Somerville Public Schools Pre-K SMILE Program

Children must be Somerville residents and 4 years old by August 31st in order to be eligible to apply for the SMILE pre-school program at the Somerville Public Schools. The SMILE program is a free program offered at the Michael E. Capuano Early Childhood Center, as well as a limited number of classrooms at the Argenziano School, West Somerville Neighborhood School, and the Winter Hill Community Innovation School. SMILE school hours are Monday-Friday, 8:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

West Family Day Care

West Family Day Care is a mixed-age, play, project, and relationship based program. We serve ten children at a time, including some school age children after school and during school vacations, in addition to our primary mix of toddlers and preschoolers. Our space offers the best of school and home in a first floor apartment converted for use as a child care program, with full use of our back porch and shaded yard. We enjoy connections to community and nature on our daily walks to local parks and regular visits to the Alewife Brook. We offer a range of art, science, building, dramatic play, cooking, and natural materials and ample time for involved projects and deep play indoors and out. All our caregivers are experienced and trained and live locally, with a ratio of two caregivers to ten children. We provide homemade meals and snacks, served family style.
